Woodworking

The bed is coming along

As I mentioned in my last woodworking post I started this project with some very raw wood. My dad and I completed the resawing process and the wood dried thoroughly while on sojourn in Spokane. A couple weeks ago my parents brought the last few pieces over to Seattle when they came to visit. I got right to work jointing and planing and now I have all of the pieces required to complete the bed milled to length, width and thickness. This week I am planning to drill the mortises in the legs, routing the tops and finish the jig for the slat mortises in the headboard and footboard. I promise to include some pictures of my progress so far in my next post. It is really kind of sad. I have spent a lot of hours working this project only to have a stack of boards to show for it. But soon things will be taking shape.

To Build a Bed

Over the next few months I am going to be building Sarah's Anniversary present. This is our 5 year, which, for all you gift givers out there, is the wood anniversary. I am going to be building a Mission style bed our of Western Maple. A few months ago I bought about 125 board feet of old growth wood from a local source. The guy uses a chainsaw to cut the logs into ~2" planks of varying width. Fortunately my father has a Mighty Mite type bandsaw sawmill. I was able to get the slabs to my dad and we milled almost all of the pieces up this last weekend. I will post a pictorial journey of building this bed hopefully it will be fun to watch and hopefully it will be good enough to show at the end.
